One of the most important rules of upholstery care is to deal with spills as soon as possible. The longer a liquid remains on the fabric, the more opportunity it has to penetrate deeper into the fibers.
When a spill occurs, avoid rubbing the affected area aggressively. Instead, use a clean, absorbent cloth or paper towel to gently blot the liquid. Work from the outside of the spill toward the center to prevent it from spreading.
For thicker substances such as sauces, food, or cosmetics, carefully remove the excess material using a spoon or dull edge before treating the remaining mark.
Quick action does not always eliminate a stain completely, but it can dramatically reduce the chances of permanent discoloration.
