NDIS life skills programs teach everyday skills that help people with disability live more independently. This guide explains what the programs teach, how funding works and how to spot a good one. Care & Culinary has supported Gold Coast participants since 2023, so we also share what we see in real service agreements. Funding rules change, so check your plan and ndis.gov.au before you book.
A life skills program is a structured activity that teaches practical skills and links to your goals. A facilitator or support worker guides you, and the program usually has a clear start and end.
Life skills programs teach skills in a structured setting. NDIS Community Access lets you practise those skills in real places, such as shops, cafes and public transport. Many participants use both.
| Skill area | Example | Goal it supports |
| Cooking | Following a recipe | Independence at home |
| Money | Budgeting for groceries | Confidence with spending |
| Travel | Using a bus route | Getting around alone |
| Household | Laundry and cleaning | A safe, tidy home |
| Communication | Ordering at a cafe | Social confidence |
Cooking suits many goals. Participants plan, measure, follow steps, stay safe in the kitchen and work as a team.
Our course runs on Saturdays from 1:00pm to 3:00pm at Helensvale Library & Cultural Centre. We keep classes to five participants, so everyone gets attention. Participants finish with a competition, a graduation and a certificate.
Practice makes skills stick. Our NDIS Day Tours Gold Coast trips give participants real practice with planning, travel and money, with a support worker alongside.
Life skills support usually sits under Capacity Building or Core supports, depending on your NDIS plan. Each support must be reasonable and necessary and link to your goals. Confirm the details with your planner or support coordinator.
You may cover ingredients, materials or tickets, depending on the program. Ask your provider what is included before you start.
Small groups suit people who want friendships and shared learning. One-to-one support suits people who want a personal pace. Supported Independent Living (SIL) houses and group homes can also ask for custom group programs.
A good program supports a goal. Look for these signs:
Search the NDIS Commission’s provider register to confirm a provider is registered. Registered providers follow national quality and safety rules.
Ask every provider the same questions, then compare the answers.
Care & Culinary started on the Gold Coast in 2023 and holds NDIS registration number 4-JT7NFWO. Our head office is in Parkwood, and our staff hold Blue Card and NDIS Worker Screening checks. We keep groups small, so participants see the same facilitators each week.
Our classes, our NDIS Community Access support and our NDIS Day Tours Gold Coast trips work together under one registration. One parent told us her son came home proud after his very first class.
